…teaching math for understanding. The memories I have of school math are of ‘mad minute’ quizzes for every operation, struggling to understand large numbers, and doing everything in my power to hide, destroy, and avoid the worksheets I was given. I am far from the only one with these memories. My experience with math as something to be memorized robbed me of the opportunity to develop understanding. As a result I focus on teaching math for understanding. On this website you will find:
Resources for teaching math for understanding (fraction illustrations, games, number talks, elementary geometry puzzles, and other challenges/activities)
Examples of student sense-making.
Anecdotes from the intersection between math learning and counselling.
